Bengaluru: Criticising the Sangh Parivar affiliates decision to not allow girl students to wear hijab, Karnataka Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayaraddi, has said that ‘hijab’ should not be identified with any religion.

“It is a culture. Anyone can observe Hijab or wear a Burqa. There is no law barring Hindus from wearing it.”

Basavaraj statement comes after Muslim girls at Sri Kumareshwara Arts and Commerce College threatened to discontinue studies if their college bans burqa.

Responding to queries of the media, the state Education Minister said that criminal action would be initiated against educational institutions which directly or indirectly create problems for girls wearing ‘Hijab’ or ‘Burqa’.
