Free to vote but remain united, says Asansol Imam, who lost his son in clashes

ASANSOL: Moulana Imadadul Rashidi, who made headlines as a messenger of peace in West Bengal’s Asansol after his teenaged son was killed in communal clashes last year urged residents not to let the election discourse divide them.

In his sermon preceding the Friday prayers, the imam of Noorani Masjid in Railpar locality, appealed the attendees of over 2,000 people for peace and reminded them they were free to vote but should remain united and give peace and amity a chance.

Asansol votes on April 29 in the fourth phase.

“Polls will come and go but we have to stay together for generations to come. Don’t let the discourse around it affect your relationship with others. Hindus and Muslims have a history of staying together in this country for centuries. Don’t let it create a chasm in the name of religion and affect our social fabric,” Rashidi said, as per Times Of India reports.

“Even those belonging to different political parties should not fight each other. Let us all continue to stay peacefully,” he added.

Imam’s 16-year-old son Mohammad Sibtullah Rashidi had been brutally lynched to death by a communal mob following Ram Navami in March 2018.

The Imam’s “actions was praiseworthy” who controlling his emotions set an example by calming down an agitated Muslim mob from retaliating. The peace-loving soul stopped decided not to name any suspect before the police saying, “My son has lived his life, do not bring sorrow to other homes.”

“Hatred is short-lived, but peace and trust are binding factors. Nobody should ever tell you who you should vote for. It is a personal choice. But whoever you vote for, do stay united. Give peace a chance. This is our country and it is our responsibility to keep it peaceful,” said Rashidi.

Another Telangana student ends life, toll 20

Hyderabad: Another Intermediate student committed suicide in Telangana on Saturday, taking the toll to 20 since the Board of Intermediate Education last week announced the results, which were marred by goof-ups.

In the latest incident, a 17-year-old girl immolated herself in Narayanpet district.

Depressed after failing in one subject in the 12th standard examination, Sirisha committed self-immolation at her house in Dhanwada block of Narayanpet district, about 160 km from Hyderabad.

Sirisha’s parents had gone to the fields when she took the extreme step. The family members later said that she was depressed after failing in zoology.

The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) had announced the results of Intermediate first year and second year (11th and 12th standard) examinations on April 18, but the discrepancies in the results triggered a spate of suicides by the students, leading to widespread protests by the parents, student groups and political parties.

On Thursday, Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao ordered free re-counting and re-verification of the answer-sheets of all the students who failed in the examinations. He also appealed to the students not to commit suicide, saying failing in Intermediate test was not the end of life.

A total of 9.74 lakh students appeared for the Intermediate examinations held in February-March, out of which as many 3.28 lakh failed to secure pass marks.

Meanwhile, a three-member panel formed by the government to probe the lapses in results submitted its report on Thursday. The panel looked into the system deployed by Globarena Technologies, whose services were hired by the Telangana BIE to conduct the examinations and process the results.

The committee headed by G.T. Venkateswar Rao, Managing Director, Telangana State Technological Service, and also comprising A. Vassan of BITS Hyderabad and Nishanth Dongari of IIT Hyderabad, submitted its report to B. Janardhan Reddy, Secretary, Higher Education, Government of Telangana.

The panel also made recommendations to avoid such lapses in conducting examinations in the future.

The process of re-verification of answersheets of the failed students and other applicants was underway at 12 centres across the state. Five of these centres are located in Hyderabad.

Janardhan Reddy and BIE Secretary A. Ashok on Thursday held a video conference with the district collectors on the arrangements for the smooth conduct of the process.

While the BIE was re-valuating the papers of the failed students without applications, more than 50,000 students, who cleared the examinations but were not satisfied with the marks obtained, also applied for re-verification. Janardhan Reddy said they were still receiving applications.

He assured the students that the entire process would be completed before the Advanced Supplementary examinations beginning May 16.

BIE Secretary Ashok said that each centre was handling 70,000 to 120,000 answersheets. The Board would release a daily bulletin on the status of re-verification. He said the manpower and material were in place at all the centres for the smooth conduct of the process.

However, protests by students, parents and student bodies continued at the BIE office. The students and parents found fault with the attitude of the police who were not allowing them entry to the Board office. They complained about lack of information about the re-verification process, leading to confusion.

The students also demanded transparency in the entire process to clear their doubts. They sought free re-verification for all the students. “Why should we pay fee for the blunders committed by them,” asked a student, who cleared the test but was unhappy with the marks given to him.

The student groups and the opposition parties have demanded Rs 25 lakh as compensation for every students’ family who ended their lives.

On Friday, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the Telangana government, seeking a detailed report on the goof-ups by the Board.

Taking suo motu cognisance of the media reports on student suicides, the Commission sought a detailed report in the matter within four weeks, including action taken against the guilty and relief, if any, provided to the aggrieved families.

Saudi Arabia faces worldwide criticism due to this decision

Dubai: Saudi Arabia faced worldwide criticism Wednesday for its mass execution of a group made up mostly of people from the kingdom’s Shiite Muslim minority, some of whom the UN said were minors when charged.

UN rights chief Michelle Bachelet condemned Riyadh’s Tuesday execution of 37 Saudi nationals, saying “it was particularly abhorrent that at least three of those killed were minors at the time of their sentencing”.

The EU echoed her censure, calling the execution of people charged as minors a “serious violation”.

Spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic said the fact that the majority of those executed were Shiites had “the potential to fuel sectarian tensions”.

They were put to death after being convicted of terrorism, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported, in the largest mass execution in the country for more than three years.

At least 33 of those executed belonged to Saudi Arabia’s Shiite minority, according to Human Rights Watch.

The rights group said the convictions were based on “unfair” mass trials and on confessions allegedly extracted through torture.

The Sunni-dominated kingdom’s interior ministry said some of those executed were accused of “inciting sectarian strife”, a charge often used in Saudi Arabia against Shiite activists.

One person was crucified after being killed, SPA reported, a measure reserved for particularly serious crimes in the ultra-conservative oil-rich kingdom, where executions are usually carried out by beheading.

– ‘Tool to crush dissent’ –

“Saudi authorities will inevitably characterise those executed as terrorists… but the reality is that Saudi courts are largely devoid of any due process, and many of those executed were condemned based solely on confessions they credibly say were coerced,” said HRW’s deputy Middle East director Michael Page.

“Executing prisoners en masse shows that the current Saudi leadership has little interest in improving the country’s dismal human rights record.”

Rights group Amnesty International said most of those executed were “convicted after sham trials” based on “confessions extracted through torture”.

The executions were “yet another gruesome indication of how the death penalty is being used as a political tool to crush dissent” from within the Shiite minority, it added in a statement.

The rights watchdog said 11 of those executed were convicted of spying for Iran, while at least 14 others were sentenced in connection with anti-government protests in the Eastern Province between 2011 and 2012.

Among those executed was Abdulkareem al-Hawaj, who was only 16 at the time of his arrest, Amnesty said.

– ‘Not a whisper’ from US –

The mass execution is the largest since January 2016, when Saudi Arabia executed a group of 47 people convicted of “terrorism”, including prominent Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

The cleric’s execution prompted a furious reaction from Tehran.

Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran were attacked in violent demonstrations, prompting Riyadh to sever relations.

Iran’s top diplomat Wednesday slammed the silence of US President Donald Trump’s administration on the executions.

“After a wink at the dismembering of a journalist, not a whisper from the Trump administration when Saudi Arabia beheads 37 men in one day — even crucifying one two days after Easter,” Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Twitter.

He was referring to the murder of prominent Saudi journalist and regime critic Jamal Khashoggi last year in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Lebanon’s Shiite movement Hezbollah, a key ally of Tehran, accused the United States of being “a key partner” in Saudi Arabia’s “heinous crimes”.

“Hezbollah strongly condemns the heinous crime committed by the criminal Saudi regime against dozens of innocent civilians, whose only fault was to demand freedom and freedom of expression,” Hezbollah said in statement.

At least 100 people have been executed in Saudi Arabia since the start of the year, according to data released by SPA.

Last year, Saudi Arabia carried out 149 death sentences, making it one of the world’s top three executioners along with China and Iran, according to Amnesty.

The Eastern Province — home to the bulk of the country’s Shiite minority — has seen bouts of unrest since 2011, when protesters emboldened by the Arab Spring took to the streets demanding an end to alleged discrimination by the government.

Although no official figures exist, Shiites make up an estimated 10-15 percent of the ultra-conservative kingdom’s population of 32 million.

Chief Minister Adityanath slams SP-BSP alliance

Shahjahanpur (Uttar Pradesh): Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attacked the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ‘gathbandhan’ by referring to the incident where a bull had entered the grounds while their rally was in progress in Kannauj. “Even the bovine breed is now unwilling to forgive the criminals,” he said.

“I was recently there in Kannauj where the people told me that a bull had entered the venue of ‘gathbandhan’ rally, probably to find out which of the slaughterhouse operators were there and to treat them accordingly,” he said.

“I prayed to the bull to keep doing his job while we take care of the ones who mistreat the poor, put roadblocks in the state’s development and have forced the youth to leave the state,” he said at an election rally here.

A bull had entered the ‘gathbandhan’ rally held in Kannauj on April 25 before the commencement of the rally.

Chief Minister Yogi also said that the people of India are now pitching hard for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019 in numbers far exceeding that of 2014 thanks to his works during his rule as the PM.

“In 2014 it was just the name Modi which drew the people towards BJP, today in 2019 his work as the Prime Minister for five years has added to the magic, and that is why wherever I have gone I have heard people chanting Modi, Modi,” he said.

Uttar Pradesh, where 80 Lok Sabha seats are at stake, is undergoing polls during all seven phases. So far, the election has been held for 26 Lok Sabah seats. The counting of votes will take place on May 23.

Erdogan slams Macron over ‘Armenia genocide’ remembrance

Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan upped his war of words Saturday with French counterpart Emmanuel Macron for creating a day of remembrance for the 1915 Armenian “genocide”.

Macron decided in February to formally to mark the mass killings and forced deportations of Armenians by troops from the Ottoman Empire — which preceded modern-day Turkey and sided with German and Austro-Hungary in World War I.

France on Wednesday held its first “national day of commemoration of the Armenian genocide”.

It was the first major European country to recognise the massacres as genocide in 2001 and Macron has said his decision on a commemoration is designed to show Paris “knows how to look history in the face”.

But Erdogan, who has urged “political novice” Macron to “focus on massacres committed by French troops during the colonial era” on Saturday again denounced the idea.

“Delivering a message to 700,000 Armenians who live in France will not save you, Monsieur Macron,” Erdogan told a gathering of his ruling party in Kizilcahamam, north of Ankara.

“Learn first to be honest in politics — if you are not you cannot win,” said Erdogan, adding he had told Macron his views several times face to face.

Turkish officials have indicated France should look first at its own record, notably in Algeria and its role in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Rwanda’s current government accuses Paris of being complicit in the atrocities committed by the majority Hutu community on minority Tutsis.

France has always denied the allegations and Macron announced the creation of a panel of historians and researchers earlier in April which will be tasked with investigating France’s role.

Some 30 countries and a number of historians recognise the 1915 massacre of between 1.2 and 1.5 million Armenians as genocide.

Ankara rejects the term, saying World War I brought countless fatalities on both sides against a further backdrop of famine and civil war.

Armenians commemorate the massacres on April 24 — the day in 1915 when thousands of Armenian intellectuals suspected of harbouring nationalist sentiment and being hostile to Ottoman rule were rounded up.

At the Paris commemoration, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe declared France wanted to contribute to having the massacre internationally recognised as a crime against humanity.

He added Paris “will not be impressed by any lies” on the matter nad supported “historical accuracy and reconciliation”.

Would not have needed surgical strikes if Sadhvi cursed Masood Azhar: Digvijaya

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Saturday took a swipe at opponent and BJP candidate Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur stating that there would have been no need of surgical strikes if she had cursed Pakistan based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar.

Addressing an election rally here at Ashoka Gardens, Singh said: “Thakur says she had cursed ATS chief Hemant Karkare, who had given supreme sacrifice for the country and is considered a martyr. There would have been no need of surgical strikes if she had cursed Pakistan based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar.”

Taking on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the senior Congress leader said: “Prime Minister had said that terrorists were hunted even when they were hiding in hell. But I want to ask him where was he when Pulwama, Pathankot and Uri attacks happened in the country. Why we were not able to get rid of such attacks?”

Digvijaya Singh further said that Hindu-Muslim-Sikh-Christians are brothers. “These people say Hindus should get united as they are in danger. I want to tell them that this country was ruled by Muslims for 500 years. No harm was done to any religion. Be careful to those people who sell religion.”

“In our religion, we say “Har Har Mahadev” but our religious sentiments have been hurt by the BJP as they say Har Har Modi. We all know whose photo will appear on the screen if we type ‘feku’ (liar) on Google,” he added.

Continuing his tirade against the BJP, Singh said: “Mama got scared when my candidature from Bhopal was announced. Uma Bharti refused to contest, Gaur said he is not well. However, just a day before the last date of filing nomination, they announced the candidature of Pragya Thakur from Bhopal.”

Voting in Bhopal will take place on May 12. The counting of votes will be held on May 23.

US reels from deadly synagogue attack on final day of Passover

Poway: A teenage gunman who wrote a hate-filled manifesto opened fire at a synagogue in California on Saturday, killing one person and injuring three others including the rabbi as worshippers marked the final day of Passover, authorities said.

The shooting in the town of Poway, north of San Diego, came exactly six months after a white supremacist killed 11 people at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue — the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in US history.

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said those wounded included the rabbi — who had injuries to both index fingers — as well as a female minor and 34-year-old man who were injured by shrapnel.

A 60-year-old woman died from her wounds.

Gore identified the suspect, who was arrested after fleeing the scene, as 19-year-old John Earnest and said he had no prior arrest record.

He said Earnest burst into the Chabad of Poway synagogue shortly after 11:20 a.m. local time and opened fire with an assault weapon that appears to have malfunctioned, preventing him from inflicting more harm.

Gore said an off-duty border patrol agent who was at the synagogue at the time of the shooting opened fire on the gunman as he was fleeing, striking his car but missing the suspect.

The man was eventually apprehended by a San Diego police officer who had been monitoring dispatch radio and raced to the scene, San Diego police chief David Nisleit said.

“He clearly saw the suspect’s vehicle, the suspect jumped out with his hands up and was immediately taken into custody by the San Diego police department,” Nisleit said.

– Hate-filled manifesto –

Gore said authorities were examining Earnest’s social media activity and establishing the legitimacy of an anti-Semitic open letter he apparently published on a far-right message board hours before the attack.

“We have copies of his social media posts and his open letter and we’ll be reviewing those to determine the legitimacy of it and how it plays in to the investigation,” he said.

The manifesto, reviewed by AFP, is similar to one posted on the same message board by Brenton Tarrant, a white supremacist who was behind the March 15 mosque attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand, that left 50 people dead.

The hate-filled letter lauds Tarrant’s actions and that of the Pittsburgh shooter and claims responsibility for a fire at a mosque in California a week after the Christchurch shootings.

Speaking at a rally in Wisconsin, President Donald Trump denounced Saturday’s shooting as a “hate crime” and offered his support to the victims.

“Tonight, America’s heart is with the victims of the horrific synagogue shooting in California,” he told supporters.

“Our entire nation mourns the loss of life, prays for the wounded and stands in solidarity with the Jewish community. We forcefully condemn the evil of anti-Semitism and hate which must be defeated.”

California’s Governor Gavin Newsom also denounced the tragedy.

“While we continue to learn more about what transpired, we can’t ignore the circumstances around this horrific incident,” he said.

“No one should have to fear going to their place of worship, and no one should be targeted for practicing the tenets of their faith.”

– ‘Flames of hatred’ –

Minoo Anvari told the local CNN affiliate that her husband was inside the synagogue during the shooting.

“Just one message from all of us from our congregation that we are standing together,” she said. “We are strong. You can’t break us. We are all together.”

On Twitter, Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she was “heartbroken” by news of the shooting.

“We have a responsibility to love + protect our neighbors,” she said.

“The hatred and violence has got to stop,” added California representative Mike Levin.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles said in a statement that the shooting was “a horrific reminder that the flames of hatred still burn strong among some.”

“An attack, on any house of worship, from churches in Sri Lanka and France to synagogues in Jerusalem or Pittsburgh to mosques in Christchurch, are an assault on human dignity and our rights as people of faith to pray to God,” it added.

Saturday’s shooting comes amid a rise in hate crimes in the United States, the majority targeting those of Jewish faith.

Last year, the Anti-Defamation League, which combats anti-Semitism and discrimination, reported a 57 percent leap in the number of anti-Semitic incidents in 2017, the sharpest yearly spike since the 1970s.

Rahul Gandhi pauses his speech briefly during ‘azaan’ in Amethi

Amethi (Uttar Pradesh): Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday paused his speech briefly on hearing the ‘azaan’, the Islamic call for prayer from a nearby mosque in Amethi.

The Congress president was addressing a rally here when the sound of the ‘azaan’ was heard and he halted his speech and waited till the prayer call stopped to resume his speech in a few minutes.

Traditionally, Azaan is called out five times in a day by a muezzin, who summons the faithful for mandatory worship.

While addressing an election rally here, Rahul demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the people of the country for “doing nothing” in the last five years.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is giving a lot of speeches but he is not talking about the promises he made to people, be it giving Rs 15 lakh or giving employment to the youth. The country wants to know why Narendra Modi did not fulfil his promises in the last five years,” Gandhi said while talking to reporters here.

“PM Narendra Modi should apologise to the country for doing nothing in the last five years,” he added.

He accused Prime Minister of taking away several developmental projects from Amethi and Raibareli.

“Chowkidar ji has snatched a lot of things from Amethi and Raibareli. He took away IIIT, food park. We had planned to make Amethi an agricultural centre, Narendra Modiji broke that dream,” the Congress president said.

Reiterating his challenge for a debate with PM Modi, Gandhi said, “Prime Minister should say: I (PM Modi) gave Rs 30,000 crore to Anil Ambani, did a scam in Rafale deal, action is going to be initiated against me (PM Modi). The truth is as soon as Congress will come to power, the truth of Rafale will come out.”

“Prime Minister has the opportunity to accept before the country that he has made a mistake but he cannot escape from the truth,” he added.

Asked why he is only targeting the Prime Minister and not the Union Ministers, Rahul said, “Ministers in the government are irrelevant. Whether it is Arun Jaitley or Sushma Swaraj, they have been humiliated. Only one man is running the country for the last five years, so we are seeking answers from him,” he said.

US driver targeted family because they looked Muslim: police

Los Angeles: A California man who deliberately drove into a crowd of people, injuring eight, did so because he thought they were Muslim, police said Friday.

The driver, 34-year-old Isaiah Peoples, reportedly targeted the family solely on their appearance, according to police in Sunnyvale, near San Francisco, who are now treating the case as a “hate crime”.

“There is new evidence that Peoples intentionally targeted victims based on their race and belief that they were Muslim,” said Sunnyvale Public Security in a statement.

According to local media, three members of the same family are among the eight pedestrians injured Tuesday — a father and his son and daughter.

The nationality and religion of the family have not been released.

A lawyer for Peoples said the incident “was clearly the result of a mental disorder”, and he would seek psychiatric treatment for his client — who he described as a military veteran possibly suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.
