Sri Lanka Balst: Local Muslim, Masjid committee alerted Police, Army about terrorist ‘safehouse’

Islamophobia that is slowly engulfing people across the globe, with Muslims being attacked globally for following the religion it was a local Muslim youngster that had first raised the alarm about the terrorist safe house in Sri Lankan’s Kalmunai town followed by a raid by the security forces that killed 15 people inside the safe house.

It was this young youth who was passing through the street near the iron bridge in the Sainthamaruthu locality who had noticed a man standing with a rifle inside the house, Indian express reports.

And in no time, the residents gathered at the house, demanded the IDs of people inside.

Local Masjid committee too arrived at the spot after one of the men tried to fire in the air and the Police and the Army were alerted.

Taking action on the tip-off received, the whole episode lasted for about one-and-a-half hours on Friday evening said the sources.
According to sources, at least 15 people, including children are believed to have been killed in the raid including the father and two brothers of Zaharan Hashim while Hashim’s wife and four-year-old daughter were rescued.

Hashim is the suspected mastermind behind the Easter Sunday blasts that has killed over 250 people in churches and hotels across the country.

“We were all deeply upset about blasts on Easter, especially the killing of so many people at their places of worship. This made us angry, and cautious too,” said a local resident Mohammed Sulfikkar.

“The youth who saw the man with the rifle alerted others and all of us went to the house. We were suspicious because they rented that house only 10 days ago, and had no contact with anyone in the area. When we asked them to show their IDs, they were evasive. One of them got angry and said they were Muslims and it was unfair to suspect them. But we told them that we were also Muslims. When the argument got heated, one of them took out a rifle and tried to fire at the air… many of us ran.”

Another committee member said: “When we reached the house, the situation had escalated. One of them started shouting at people and called everyone ‘betrayers’. In between, he promised they would not harm Muslims. But we were adamant that we wanted to search the house.”

“One of the youths inside started throwing currency notes at the crowd. He abused us in Tamil and shouted at us to ‘eat the money’ and leave them alone. All this happened in less than 30 minutes. We alerted a traffic police officer in the neighbourhood and soon the Army arrived,” said the committee member.

Reacting on the tweet, Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi, President of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) had tweeted, “@Andrew007Uk Pl remember you’re not Queen’s Governor General, but a diplomat. “Voters in the urban areas are supporting the BJP’s view on the Pulwama terror attack and the government’s air strike at terror camps across the border. While the urban areas have always supported the BJP, the party is also getting some share of votes in the rural areas,” Haque said.

SC allows Centre’s plea to defer Rafale hearing

New Delhi, April 29 (IANS) Acting on Centre’s plea to defer the Rafael verdict review hearing fixed for Tuesday on grounds that it needs time to file reply on merits, the Supreme Court on Monday allowed the Centre to circulate a letter for adjournment of the hearing.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi permitted the Centre’s counsel to circulate the letter regarding the deferment among parties, including petitioners, who filed review pleas in the apex court.

The top court had on April 10 allowed the pleas asking the court to review its judgement on Rafale deal based on media reports on leaked documents, and also urged the court to dismiss the government’s objections claiming “privilege” on the documents.

The Centre had contended before the court that the three privileged documents were unauthorisedly removed from the government ministry concerned, and then these documents were used by the petitioner to file a review petition challenging the top court judgment of December 14, 2018.

In the December 14, 2018 judgment, the court had dismissed all pleas challenging the Rafale fighter jets deal.

India and France got into a deal in 2015 for the procurement of fighter jets.

The Centre has contended that the documents were protected under the Official Secrets Act, and therefore, not admissible as evidence in the court, but the Supreme Court rejected it.

The court noted that the documents were published in consonance with the freedom of speech guaranteed under the Constitution.

Fight between ‘real’ and ‘fake’ chowkidar: Samajwadi Party pits sacked BSF jawan Tej Bahadur Yadav against Modi in Varanasi

Lucknow: In a surprise development, the Samajwadi Party on Monday changed its candidate in the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat and fielded ex-BSF trooper Tej Bahadur Yadav against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Samajwadi Party announced the candidature of Tej Bahadur Yadav, a resident of Haryana’s Rewari, who was dismissed from service after he complained about the poor quality of food served to the personnel.

Tej Bahadur Yadav told IANS: “Today I filed the nomination papers from Varanasi as Samajwadi Party candidate.”

He said that the fight in the Varanasi is now between “a real watchman and a fake watchman”.

“Earlier the party has fielded Shalini Yadav but then Akhileshji (SP chief Akhilesh Yadav) gave a thought about whom to field against the fake chowkidar (watchman).

“The people now have to choose between a real watchman and a fake watchman. Even Akhileshji said that we are standing with the real watchman and not with a person who only believes in rhetoric,” the ex-Border Security Force (BSF) trooper said.

He said that the Aam Aadmi Party will support his candidature in the Lok Sabha polls.

Tej Bahadur Yadav had earlier announced that he will contest as an independent candidate from Varanasi.

The BSF constable was dismissed in 2017 after he posted a video on Facebook complaining about the poor quality of food provided to the security personnel.

Attacking the Modi government, he said: “I was dismissed because I spoke the truth. The parliamentary committee, with Murli Manohar Joshi as its member, submitted the report in Parliament in my favour. Despite that, I was dismissed.”

Varanasi goes to polls on May 19 in the final phase of the seven-stage general elections.

After Pragya Thakur, another Malegaon blast accused gets ticket

Abdul Alim Jafri

After Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielded Malegaon bomb blast accused Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur from Bhopal, two more accused in Malegaon case are contesting Lok Sabha elections from eastern Uttar Pradesh. Major Ramesh Upadhyay from Ballia seat and Sudhakar Chaturvedi from Mirzapur filed their nomination papers on Friday, April 26.

Upadhyay, a key accused in the Malegaon blast case, is contesting on the symbol of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, while Sudhakar Chaturvedi, who was also questioned in connection with the case, announced his candidature on Friday from Mirzapur Lok Sabha constituency as an independent.

All the three accused have been charged under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for terrorism in relation to the Malegaon blast which happened in September 2008 and are currently out on bail.

Ramesh Upadhyay will take on Virendra Singh Mast who is contesting from BJP in Ballia, while Sudhakar Chaturvedi will be challenging Union Minister and Apna Dal leader Anupriya Patel in Mirzapur.

Ironically, soon after filing his nomination papers from Ballia, Upadhyay showed his colours by saying that he is in agreement with Sadhvi Pragya’s controversial statement on ATS chief late Hemant Karkare.

He was quoted by a Hindi daily, “If any police official dies anywhere he cannot be declared martyred. Only a freedom fighter and soldier could be martyred. Karkare was killed by a terrorist and that is the biggest example of his failure.”

Responding to Upadhyay’s nomination, Balwant Yadav, a farmer leader based in Ballia told NewsClick, “He is not any common worker but a terrorist. Such a terrorist wants to control the political system now. They do not have any election agenda before the people, but will only speak the language of a terrorist. They (him and Pragya Singh) are the key accused in the Malegaon bomb blast and are claiming that they will remove terrorism from the country. After committing so many crimes, look at their audacity that they are still contesting elections.”

He added, “I fail to understand from where do they get the courage to contest elections while the opposition remains silent. Such accused are contesting only to target a specific community. At a time when the country is witnessing a high rate of unemployment and farmers’ suicides, such terrorists contesting election is a shame for our district. Pehle inhone bahar bomb foda ab Ballia me fodenge (Earlier, he blasted a bomb outside, now he will do the same in Ballia).”

Another resident of Ballia, Madhusudan Srivastava told NewsClick, “This candidate is not at all popular in Ballia and soon villagers are going to boycott him.”

He further said, “Here the fight is between BJP’s Virendra Singh Mast and Neeraj Shekhar of the Mahagathbandhan. Both come from the Rajput community. Even if Upadhyay manages to secure two thousand votes that would be more. Though Shekhar’s name has not been declared officially by the Samajwadi Party (SP) but his name is in the top race.”

“It is a shame for us that an accused is contesting from the land of Mangal Pandey and former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar. Ballia is a backward district and in five years of Modi’s government, this district has not seen any development including education and health sector but nobody will speak on such issues. The people of Ballia are not fools to vote for any terrorist. We have been lucky enough that our region never witnessed any communal riots and we will not let it happen in the near future, no matter any blast accused contests.”

Burkina church attack: Pastor, four others killed

Ouagadougou: Gunmen killed four worshippers and a pastor in the first jihadist attack on a church in Burkina Faso, security and local sources said Monday, in the latest violence to rock the formerly peaceful west African nation.

Sunday’s raid took place in the small northern town of Silgadji near Djibo, the capital of Soum province.

“Unidentified armed individuals have attacked the Protestant church in Silgadji, killing four members of the congregation and the main pastor,” a security source told AFP.

“At least two other people are missing,” the source added.

It was the first attack on a church since jihadist violence erupted in Burkina Faso in 2015.

Former colonial ruler France has deployed some 4,500 troops in Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad in a mission codenamed Barkhane to help local forces try to flush out jihadist groups.

“The attack happened around 1:00 pm, just as the faithful were leaving the church at the end of the service,” a member of the church who did not want to be identified told AFP.

“The attackers were on motorbikes. They fired in the air before aiming at the members of the congregation,” the witness added.

Burkina Faso has suffered from increasingly frequent and deadly attacks attributed to a number of jihadist groups, including the Ansarul Islam group, the Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM) and Islamic State in the Greater Sahara.

The raids began in 2015 in the north before targetting the capital Ouagadougou and other regions, notably in the the east.

A total of 350 people have been killed since 2015 — mainly in hit-and-run raids — according to an AFP tally.

The jihadist groups regularly target both Muslim and Christian clerics, mainly in the north.

In February, a Spanish Catholic priest, Father Cesar Fernandez, was killed in a raid attributed to jihadists in Nohao in the centre of the country. He was returning from the adjoining country of Togo when it happened.

Fernandez, 72, had been working in Africa since 1982 for the Salesians of Don Bosco order.

– ‘Dramatic deterioration’ –

In March, gunmen abducted Catholic priest Father Joel Yougbare from Botogui, near Djibo, in the north. The Catholic Church has not yet confirmed reports that his body has since been found.

Several imams have also been killed in the north.

According to security sources, the jihadists do not consider these Muslim clerics sufficiently radical and sometimes accuse them of having collaborated with the authorities.

But religious leaders are not the only people targeted by the extremists. On Friday, jihadists attacked a village school in Maitaougou, in the eastern province of Koulpelogo, killing five teachers and a municipal worker.

Human Right Watch’s Sahel director Corinne Dufka recently said that the surge in jihadist violence and a government crackdown had “forced tens of thousands of villagers to flee since early 2019.

“Scores of people have been murdered in what amounts to a dramatic deterioration in the rights situation in northern Burkina Faso,” she said last month.

“Villagers are living in fear as both armed Islamists and government forces have demonstrated utter disregard for human life.”

Around 4.3 million people have been driven from their homes in the worsening violence that has engulfed the entire Sahel region, including one million over the past year, according to UN humanitarian officials.
