Kanhaiya beats PM Modi in popularity test on YouTube

Hyderabad: In spite of hiring the services of the best of propaganda agencies, the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi appears to be dipping. One glaring example is Begusarai in Bihar from where Kanhaiya Kumar is contesting the Lok Sabha polls.

The polling in Begusarai was over in the evening of April 28 and now the boxes are sealed until they are opened for counting towards May end. But let us throw a glance at how a political novice Kanhaiya Kumar faired against a propaganda expert Prime Minister Modi during the campaign.

Siasat.com checked out 18 YouTube coverage between April 2 and April 27 to find out how the two faired. Amazingly, Kanhaiya Kumar has beaten Prime Minister Modi hands down.

Zee News on April 17 gave coverage to a question on protest against Kanhaiya Kumar in Bihar means for Left Wing politics in India. It garnered 3.78 lakhs viewers. The news was obviously meant to show the negative side of Kanhaiya Kumar in the poll campaign. On the same day, The Quint carried a story of PM Modi’s public rally in Bhubaneswar where ‘hundreds of empty chairs’ stared at the organizers. The news was viewed by only 96,783 persons.

ABP News has covered Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Mega Roadshow’ in Varanasi, the constituency from where he had won the 2014 election. Surprisingly, on April 25, where only 56,614 people watched the roadshow on the channel giving jitters to the organizers. The same news channel carried a story on Kanhaiya Kumar’s “Mobile Torch Rally” on April 27 which garnered 80,320 viewers.

The much-anticipated interview of Prime Minister Modi to Aaj Tak on April 26 turned out to be a major success. It was seen by 7,75,850 persons. On the other hand, Kanhaiya Kumar spoke with NDTV’s Ravish Kumar during his campaign trail on April 11. It turned out to be a bigger hit. The viewership of that program crossed 11,01,847.

What do these comparisons speak? In a way, they show a decline in the popularity of Prime Minister Modi and at the same time show Kanhaiya Kumar’s meteoric rise.

Varanasi: The Election Commission has cancelled the nomination of former Border Security Force trooper Tej Bahadur Yadav, who was set to contest from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Tej Bahadur Yadav had been served a notice on Tuesday because he had given different reasons for leaving his job in the two sets of nomination papers filed — one as an Independent and the second as a Samajwadi Party candidate.

The former security personnel told reporters that his nomination papers were cancelled at the behest of the Centre even though he had replied to the notice explaining the difference in reasons.

As soon as the news of the cancellation spread, Samajwadi Party workers gathered at the Collectorate.

Later, talking to reporters, District Magistrate Surendra Singh said that Tej Bahadur Yadav had failed to give a satisfactory response to the notice served and hence his nomination was cancelled.

Tej Bahadur Yadav said on Wednesday that he will take up the matter with the Supreme Court.

Burqa ban call not party’s official stand: Shiv Sena

Mumbai: The Shiv Sena on Wednesday evening officially dissociated itself from the ‘ban on burqa’ demand in the party’s official mouthpieces earlier in the day, following a massive furore on the issue just five days before the Islamic holy month of Ramadan begins.

Party spokesperson Neelam Gorhe stressed that every policy decision is discussed in the meeting of top leaders or announced by party President Uddhav Thackeray.

“Today’s editorial has neither been discussed nor been announced by Uddhavji and thus it may be a personal opinion of the editor on the current affairs in Sri Lanka, but is not endorsed by the party President or the party,” Gorhe said in a categorical statement, signalling a dramatic turnaround on the issue.

Strong editorials in the party’s daily mouthpieces, Saamana and Dopahar Ka Saamana, had called for a ban on burqa like the measure being mulled by the Sri Lankan government in the wake of the Easter terror strikes which claimed over 250 lives.

Major Victory for India, Masood Azhar declared global terrorist by UNSC

New Delhi: In a major victory for India, Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar was on Wednesday declared as a global terrorist by the UN Security Council.

“Masood Azhar designated as a terrorist in @UN Sanctions list,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Syed Akbaruddin tweeted.

A proposal to declare Azhar as an international terrorist was taken by the UNSC Sanctions Committee 1267, nearly three months after the JeM carried out a ghastly terror attack on CRPF convoy in Pulwama district of Kashmir.

Earlier, the proposal was being blocked by China, which lifted its “technical hold” on Wednesday.

Giriraj Singh supports Shiv Sena’s demand of imposing ban on burqa in India

Muzaffarpur (Bihar): Union Minister and BJP leader Giriraj Singh on Wednesday backed Shiv Sena’s demand of imposing a ban on burqa in India, asserting that many blasts have occurred all over the world and in India in the guise of burqa.

Citing a ban on the burqa in Sri Lanka after the deadly Easter Sunday attacks, Shiv Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamna’ on Wednesday demanded the imposition of a similar ban in India.

“In the country and all over the world several blasts have occurred in the guise of burqa. The burqa should be banned particularly at the time of elections. The Shiv Sena has demanded nothing wrong,” said Giriraj Singh.

The Sena’s proposal, however, was rejected by another NDA ally, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale of the Republican Party of India, who said that burqa should not be banned as it forms part of the country’s tradition.

The Shiv Sena editorial states “It has happened in Ravan’s Lanka. When will it happen in Ram’s Ayodhya? We ask this question to the PM as he is scheduled to visit Ayodhya on Wednesday”.

The Sri Lankan government on Sunday took necessary measures to impose a complete ban on all types of burqas and face covers in the wake of the horrific terror bombings that rattled the entire country on Easter Sunday, claiming lives of more than 250 people and injuring hundreds.

On the other hand, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday asked the Election Commission (EC) to take action against Shiv Sena for its “polarising” editorial in its mouthpiece Samna seeking a ban on the burqa in order to ensure national security.

“I request the EC to take cognizance of this article because it is trying to create divisions and polarisation within society. This is a grave violation of the Model Code of Conduct,” Owaisi said at a press conference

Will Kanhaiya Kumar Make History in Begusarai?

Kanhaiya has been trying to dismantle Modi’s and Bharatiya Janata Party’s propaganda systematically by bringing the spotlight back on issues related to unemployment, demonetisation, GST, unfulfilled promises, and corporate loan waivers at the cost of people’s tax money.

Will Kanhaiya Kumar Make History in Begusarai?

Begusarai: Bihar votes on the basis of caste, is a general perception, which might be true even for the rest of India. One of the slogans from the campaign of Communist Party of India’s (CPI’s) candidate from Begusarai, Kanhaiya Kumar – Is baar dal se nahi balki dil se vote dijiye (Vote from your heart, not for group/caste) – aims to alter that.

After attending 11 independent meetings arranged by people from varied backgrounds from across the country, and after speaking to more than 90 people – including pan shop owners, small businessmen, Muslim community leaders, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh followers, hotel managers, hotel staff and scores of citizens – it is evident that Kanhaiya has an edge in Begusarai.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Balakot narrative seems to be working in some parts of Bihar, but Kanhaiya’s campaign has managed to turn the tide against Modi to a large extent. In a public gathering, Kanhaiya said, “Yes, our soldiers are brave. They can do cross-border raids, kill terrorists, but that’s to the Army’s credit, and not Modi’s. He is hiding his failure in preventing the killings of 42 CRPF jawans in our own homeland, by asking votes in the name of jawans. And do you know who are these Jawans who die and, in whose names the prime minister asks for votes later? They are the youth from places like Begusarai. They are sons of the farmers, labourers, and of the common people; not Adani’s or Ambani’s sons, whom Modi really serves.”

Kanhaiya’s threefold approach has worked wonders in Begusarai.

First, he has been trying to dismantle Modi’s and Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) propaganda systematically by bringing the spotlight back on issues related to unemployment, demonetisation, GST, unfulfilled promises, and corporate loan waivers at the cost of people’s tax money.

Second, Kanhaiya counters the highly communal and hateful campaign of BJP candidate in Begusarai, Giriraj Singh, which Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Tanveer Hassan couldn’t tackle effectively. This may have possibly drawn a considerable chunk of Muslim votes towards Kanhaiya.

Third, for the last 7-8 months, the CPI leader has been present on the ground in Begusarai, meeting people and, more importantly, explaining to them his ‘vision for Begusarai’.

BJP candidate Giriraj Singh’s controversial comment targeting Muslims in Begusarai – “If they won’t say Vande Mataram, they won’t even get three feet of land (for the burial)” – was passionately countered by Kanhaiya, which Hassan hasn’t been able to do. This has helped Muslim voters of the constituency switch their preference to Kanhaiya. In response to Singh’s communal remark, the CPI leader had said that the land belongs to the people of Begusarai, and it isn’t of Giriraj’s, Modi’s or anybody else’s to give.

The BJP’s campaign is overtly hateful and communal, which is being countered with the message of love, unity, and peace by not just Kanhaiya, but hundreds of volunteers, retired civil servants, actors, social activists from across the country who are supporting him.

Public figures like Shabana Azmi, Prakash Raj and Jignesh Mevani have been conducting large-scale public meetings, and are explaining to people what the fight in Begusarai stands for, and how Kanhaiya’s victory will benefit the country.

On micro level, V.N. Rai, former DGP, Uttar Pradesh, Shabnam Hashmi and other activists, professors from local colleges, educational institutes, community leaders, activists, civil society members of Bihar, ex-journalists, several students from across the country, a musical warrior member from Goa and several others have organised a number of meetings. These people continue to explain how the sedition charges and anti-India sloganeering case against Kanhaiya were fabricated, how the tax money of Begusarai is not being utilised for development, how Begusarai deserves better schools and colleges, roads, hospitals, and how a strong voice like Kanhaiya can realistically deliver on these promises.

A massive chunk of youth from Begusarai is voting for the former student leader, crossing their caste and community lines. A young boy named Kanhaiya, who is a Bhumihar and ironically works with the RSS, said, “How can I not vote for Kanhaiya? Have you heard him speak? The way he talks about people’s issues, our issues, nobody else can do it. I am from RSS, but I use my brain, and so do a lot of people from the Sangh. I have watched all the videos of Kanhaiya and I can’t believe someone like him can speak of breaking up India. Even if he had said it indeed, the BJP and RSS have made a fool out of us for so long, and it is time to teach them a lesson.”

When we asked a mobile shop owner in the heart of Begusarai which candidate he will go with, he waited for a few people at the shop to leave, before saying: “These were the BJP people. They are trying to intimidate us, but Kanhaiya has given us courage. Despite being called anti-national, put in jail, we have seen him standing up to Modi, and asking the right questions.” Another customer at the shop, who was purchasing a power bank, joined the conversation, and said, “I am a Muslim, and I can tell you that we are voting for Kanhaiya. We did give Tanveer Hassan a chance before this It is Kanhaiya’s turn now.”

In a village in Barauni Assembly constituency, a teacher from the fishermen community – who is well respected for the transformation he has brought in the lives of the fishermen community because of his teachings – said, “Kanhaiya has given us a new hope. A boy from Begusarai is on the national map today and that too for standing up against Modi, BJP and their authoritarian rule. He also has a vision and a plan for our constituency. Not only I, the families of my students, major panchayats in our region, all are voting for Kanhaiya.”

A journalist of a leading daily, who is supposed to be close to Tanveer Hassan, and who used to manage his media relations, in a video, has declared that Hassan himself seems to have accepted defeat, and doesn’t consider himself as a part of the race anymore.

“Modi ji aayenge to bhi fark nahi padega, kyonki hamara beta sansad me un ka jeena haram karega (Even if Modi returns to power, it won’t matter. Our son will be the nation’s voice, and will make things difficult for him in Parliament),” he said.

By targeting the PM while explaining how the locals of Begusarai are being exploited, by countering the hateful narrative with a strong message of love and unity, and by speaking about his vision with fearlessness, articulation and connect, Kanhaiya Kumar is likely to win from Begusarai, and enter Parliament like a storm.

EC bars Sadhvi Pragya from campaigning for 3 days

New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday barred Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, the BJP candidate from Bhopal, from campaigning for 72 hours starting 6 a.m on Thursday, for seeking votes on religious lines thereby violating the model code of conduct (MCC).

In its order issued on Wednesday, the poll panel “strongly condemned” her remarks and warned her not to repeat “such misconduct” in future.

The Commission barred her from holding public meetings, processions, rallies, road shows and giving interviews, and making public utterances in the media in connection with the ongoing elections for three days.

Thakur was issued two notices by the EC — one for her remarks during a TV interview and another for making remarks against former ATS chief Hemant Karkare.

In an interview to a television channel over the weekend, Thakur had said that she was among the people who demolished the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992 and that she was “proud” of it.

“We removed a blot from the country. We went to demolish the structure. I feel extremely proud that God gave me this opportunity and I could do that. We will make sure a Ram temple is constructed at that site,” Thakur told the channel.

The first notice against Thakur was issued after she said that former ATS chief Karkare died at the hands of terrorists during the 26/11 attack in Mumbai because she “cursed” him.

Following a backlash, Thakur apologised admitting that Karkare was a “martyr”. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had distanced itself from her remarks.

The 49-year-old is an accused in the Malegaon blasts case in which six people died and around 100 were injured in 2006. She is currently out on bail and her candidature has been challenged in the court by the father of one of the those dying in Malegaon.

PM Modi seeks votes in the name of security forces & dead bodies: Sidhu

Chandigarh: In a wielded attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Wednesday said that he seeks votes in the name of the security forces and dead bodies.

“Earlier when terrorist attacks used to take place, then people were asked to resign. Shivraj Patil had resigned after the terror attack in Mumbai. Vilasrao Deshmukh also gave his resignation. P. Chidambaram also gave his resignation, but former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh didn’t accept it. But now when terrorist attacks take place, then you seek votes,” Sidhu said while addressing a rally here.

“Tum lashon pe vote mangte ho. Tum kisano ki shahadat pe vote mangte ho,” he added.

Sidhu futher claimed that Prime Minister Modi is deflecting the minds of people from various issues.

“BJP is seeking votes on the name of Narendra Modi, while, Modi himself is seeking votes on the name of armed forces. And in Varanasi one Jawan is asking for votes against Prime Minister Modi,” he said.

“Suna hai sarhado pe tanav hain, arey zara pata to karo kya chunav hain… Aaj tum fauj ke kandhon se siyasi teer chala rahe ho,” he added.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) had earlier today issued a notice to Sidhu for his alleged personal attack on Prime Minister Modi at a public rally in Ahmedabad on April 17.

However, Sidhu didn’t stop attack Prime Minister Modi at the Chandigarh rally and said, “Hum to sochte they Chowkidaar hoga chokanna, ye to nikla nikamma.”

India braces for cyclone, puts navy on alert

Bhubaneswar: India deployed emergency personnel Wednesday and ordered the navy on standby as it braced for an extremely severe cyclonic storm barrelling towards the eastern coast.

Tropical Cyclone Fani, located in the Bay of Bengal and packing wind speeds up to 205 kilometres (127 miles) per hour, is expected to make landfall at Odisha state Friday.

Authorities have also ordered the evacuation of thousands of people from coastal districts likely to bear the brunt of the storm.

The neighbouring coastal states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have also been put on a high alert.

India’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said sea conditions were “phenomenal” over the west-central Bay of Bengal area.

“Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas,” NDMA warned on Twitter.

The office of the state’s special relief commissioner said local authorities had been told to identify “all vulnerable people… and shift them to multipurpose cyclone/flood shelters”.

“Arrangements have already been made for free kitchen, safe drinking water, lighting, health and sanitation,” it said in a statement.

Local media reports say there are over 850 shelters in the state that can accommodate around one million people.

H.R Biswas, director of the meteorological centre in state capital Bhubaneshwar, said at least 11 districts would be affected by severe rainfall.

“We have suggested people to stay indoors,” he told reporters.

Coastal Puri town, some 62 kms (40 miles) from Bhubaneshwar, has also been put a high alert.

Puri is home to Shree Jagannath, one of Hinduism’s holiest temples, which receives millions of pilgrims each year.

The government also advised the pilgrims to leave the holy town, if possible, and to reschedule any non-essential travel in the region.

India’s weather department, in an advisory, asked all fishermen in the state to return to shore by late Wednesday.

The department warned of “potential threat of flying objects … Extensive uprooting of communication and power poles …Disruption of rail, road”.

One local agency said that it had kept around 300 boats and crew on standby for rescue or relief work in the next 48 to 72 hours.

India’s election commission has eased its restrictions in Odisha’s coastal districts to allow the state authorities to carry out swift relief and rehabilitation work.

The rules, which apply during elections, suspend certain powers of the incumbent government to announce new schemes or take fresh administrative decisions.

Odisha, which has a population of around 46 million, has already voted in India’s ongoing election, which started on April 11.

The seventh and final phase of voting will be held on May 19, with counting and results due May 23.

Odisha had to evacuate some 300,000 people last October when its coastal districts were battered by cyclone Titli, with winds up to 150 kms (95 miles) per hour and heavy rains.

At least two people were killed in the cyclone.

Storms regularly hit eastern and southeastern India between April and December. In 2017, Cyclone Ockhi left nearly 250 people dead in Tamil Nadu and Kerala states.

Odisha’s worst-ever cyclone, in 1999, killed over 8,000 people.

CJI appears before probe panel in sexual harassment case

New Delhi: Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Wednesday appeared before the in-house committee led by Justice S.A. Bobde, looking into allegations of sexual harassment against him by a former staffer of the Supreme Court, said an official source familiar with the proceedings.

The source said the committee had asked the Chief Justice Gogoi to appear for the in-camera proceedings. “He met the committee regarding the allegations leveled against him,” said the source.

The woman, who has alleged sexual harassment, withdrew from the proceedings of the committee on Tuesday. In a statement to the media, she expressed serious reservations over the panel, saying it was “an in-house committee of sitting judges junior to the CJI and not an external committee as I had requested.”

The committee comprises Justices S.A. Bobde, Indu Malhotra and Indira Banerjee. The panel was re-constituted after the woman objected to the inclusion of Justice N.V. Ramana on the committee, as he was apparently a close friend of the Chief Justice. Justice Ramana immediately withdrew from the panel, and he was replaced by a woman judge.

In the three hearings scheduled until Tuesday, the woman said she felt “quite intimidated and nervous” in the presence of the three judges of the Supreme Court. The woman, in her statement to the media also said during the panel’s hearing on April 26, the judges told her that it was neither an in-house committee proceeding nor a proceeding under the Vishakha Guidelines and that it was an informal proceeding.

“I was asked to narrate my account which I did to the best of my ability even though I felt quite intimidated and nervous in the presence of three Hon’ble Judges of the Supreme Court and without having a lawyer or support person with me,” said her statement.

The committee was formed after the woman levelled allegations against the Chief Justice reportedly in a letter to 22 judges of the Supreme Court.

After the allegations of sexual harassment surfaced on April 20, the CJI held an urgent hearing and he categorically denied the woman’s allegations.

The CJI termed it as an attack on the independence of the judiciary. “There has to be bigger force behind this, they want to deactivate office of Chief Justice,” he had said during the hearing.

UK becomes first parliament to declare climate emergency

London: Britain’s opposition Labour Party on Wednesday called for “real action” after parliament became the first in the world to vote to declare a climate emergency.

“Thanks to pressure from the Labour Party, the UK just became the first country to declare an environment and #climateemergency,” the party said on its Twitter page.

“Now it’s time for real action to tackle climate change.”

Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said he hoped the vote “will trigger a wave of action from parliaments and governments around the world”.

He hopes the move will increase pressure on the government and is demanding that the country takes action to help avoid more than 1.5 degrees centigrade of warming, requiring global emissions to be cut by almost half of 2010 levels by 2030.

The vote was taken following 11 days of protests organised by climate activists Extinction Rebellion that brought several London sites to a standstill.

Extinction Rebellion called the vote a “first step in the government telling the truth about the climate and ecological emergency.”

“Pressure on our politicians will now increase as nothing but decisive action will suffice,” they added.
